What is a Cloisonné
Urn?
The creation of a cloisonné urn begins with a solid copper, bronze or brass vessel which serves as the core. On this an intricate design is formed using a precise copper wire netting. This design of copper netting is then bonded to the vessel forming compartments call cloisons. These cloisons are filled with multiple colors of enamels and then fired in a kiln. This step is repeated several times before the urn is hand polished and then gilded to create a lasting, bright finish.
Cloisonné is an ancient art dating to 2500 B.C. In the mid 14th Century, the process was passed on to China by missionaries from central Asia. The Chinese constantly enhanced the technique making it a distinct Chinese art. Since the mid 15th Centruy reign of the Ming Emperor Ching T'ai, Chinese cloisonne has become the worldwide standard by which all cloisonné is judged.
